The Link Between Your Breath + Your Menstrual Cycle
Your breath is the thread that weaves through everything… every phase, every mood, every version of you. It doesn’t just keep you alive… it tells you how you are. It’s like a body and mind barometer.
Just like your energy, focus, appetite and mood… your breath shifts through your cycle too.
Should we have learnt this at school? for me it’s a big ‘YES’
So what does that actually mean?
In your inner spring (just after your bleed), your breath might feel slower, softer, more spacious. It reflects that gentle return of energy. The little whispers of “maybe I could…”
And before we move on… when I say might, I mean might, your cycle is yours and it might be completely different to what I’m saying. But your breath can really help you connect with your cycle.
In your summer (ovulation), your breath can become light and expansive. This is often the time that people don’t notice their breath because it is doing what it needs to do. It supports you to feel energised, outward-facing, buzzing. But if ovulation is a more inward experience for you, maybe it comes with pain or grief, then you’re breath might feel faster, up in your chest, maybe more like how I describe autumn.
In your autumn (luteal phase), things can get tighter. Maybe your breath feels shallow. Maybe you sigh more often. Maybe your heart beats faster and your breath follows. This is often your body’s way of saying, “hey, slow down… you’re not made to go full steam ahead forever.”
And in winter (your bleed), your breath often drops into a deeper rhythm. It may ask for slowness, stillness. For a long exhale. For rest. It slows down to get you to sleep more… it’s in this deep rest where we can find some true magic. And if you are somebody who’s winter’s are painful, then your breath may feel more autumn. It’s here where the magic of consciously connecting with our breath can help ease this pain.
Breath Awareness = Body Awareness
When you start paying attention to how your breath changes through your cycle, something shifts.
You notice the days it feels tight in your chest…
The days it’s slower, expansive…
The days you’re sighing more, or barely noticing it at all.
And instead of pushing through or ignoring it, you start listening.
Your breath becomes a gentle signal, showing you where you’re at, and what you need.
A bit more rest? A slower morning? A walk outside?
It helps you meet yourself where you are, not where you or society think you should be.
And from there, things start to soften.
You feel a little more regulated.
You stop blaming yourself for having ‘off’ days.
You begin to feel more in sync with your inner rhythm because your breath is showing you the way.
This is where cycle/ body awareness begins. Through something as simple as noticing your breath.
Ready to explore this more deeply?
Breathwork is often taught as a one-size-fits-all practice… but your body, mind and breath are anything but one-size-fits-all. Especially when it moves cyclically.
Inside this 8-week programme, we explore how your breath shifts, and how to work with those changes, not against them. We use breath to anchor, energise, soothe and support, depending on the season you’re in.
Whether you’re still cycling, in perimenopause (the quickening) or post-menopause… you’ll learn how to reconnect with your rhythm, your breath, and your body’s wisdom.
